My interest in Icelandic stamps dates back
to 1966, when my brother visited Iceland with a friend living a
couple of houses from ours. His mother was from Iceland.
The postcards my brother send home was with
very nice stamps. I had started collecting stamps around this
time and was mainly interested in Denmark but then looked in the
catalogue and realised that Iceland had fewer and much more
beautiful stamps to collect.
From there it developed throughout the
years.
I started to get interest in the Numeral of
value aur stamps in due course and began to sort out the
different printings to the best of my knowledge that I got
mainly from the Facit catalogue.
The International Stamp Exhibition in
Copenhagen 1976 was a fantastic opportunity to see some of the
best Icelandic Exhibits of that time.
After Hafnia 76 I founded a study group on
Icelandic philately in Denmark.
Members were Ole Svinth, Torben Jensen,
Orla Nielsen, Ib Schock, Tor C. Jensen, Leif Fuglsig, Eigil
Rasmussen, Jørgen Johansson and soon Folmer Østergaard also
joined the group.
For years we had a very good close
collaboration with Islandssamlarne in Sweden as well as friends
in Iceland and several places around the world.
My own collection grew and I concentrated
on the Issues up to 1920.
I exhibited first time in 1979 at a local
exhibition in Denmark. Silver was the award as well as I
remember.
In 1984 I exhibited in Reykjavik at Nordia
84 and was awarded Large Vermeil and Grand Prix National for my
exhibit Iceland Postage Stamps up to 1920.
This was also my first visit to Iceland.
Fortunately many more have followed.
Some around 1986 local interest in
Icelandic philately was growing and I founded the club,
Islandsklubben in Denmark. I was the first Director of the club
and also the editor of our magazine which I have been several
times since.
At Nordia Reykjavik 1989 I exhibited again
and was awarded gold medal and Grand Prix National
I exhibited in 1994 in Malmø and was
awarded Gold medal and candidate to the Grand Prix Nordia which
I lost to Knud Mohrs collection of Denmark. Knud Mohr was the
FIP president those days.
I have also expertized items within
Icelandic Philately for many years.
I became a member of the Danish Faculty of
Philatelic Jurors in 1998 and became a FIP recognized judge in
2001 at Hafnia with 102 out of 110 possible points.
I served at the FEPA exhibition in Brno in
2005.
I am a member of the Copenhagen Philatelist
Club since 1974.
Member of Islandssamlerne since almost as
long.
Life member of Scandinavian Collectors Club
since many, many years.
Member of the very exclusive stamp society
in Denmark, Philatelistisk Selskab, since 1999.
