Þann 16. maí næstkomandi verður haldið góðgerðaruppboð á frímerkjasafni William H. Gross. Þess má geta að meðal uppboðsefnis eru afar áhugaverð uppboðsnúmer úr Íslandssafni hans og þar má meðal annars finna eitt fylgibréf með skildingamerkjum á. Í þessu samhengi þótti því rétt að kynna einstaklinginn betur fyrir íslenskum söfnurum.

Gross er þekktur sem fjármálasérfræðingur og höfundur nokkurra bóka á því sviði og var m.a. talinn vera 380. ríkasti ameríkaninn samkvæmt Forbes listanum árið 2007.

Hann fæddist í Middletown í Ohio ríki árið 1944 og útskrifaðist frá Duke Háskóla um tvítugt. Eftir háskólanám gegndi hann herþjónustu í sjóher bandaríkjanna og lauk síðan MBA námi frá Háskólanum í Kaliforníu. Að námi loknu lagði Gross stund á fjárhættuspil og varð meðal annars atvinnumaður í "21" í Las Vegas. Gross segir að hann hafi náð að yfirfara reglur úr fjárhættuspilum yfir í fjármálageirann sérstaklega hvað varðar dreifingu á áhættu. Gross stjórnar nokkrum af þekktustu vogunarsjóðum heims um þessar mundir og sérhæfir sig aðallega í skuldabréfum.

Margir þekkja Gross þó betur fyrir söfnun sína á frímerkjum en hann er aðallega frægur fyrir að hafa verið annar einstaklingurinn í heiminum sem náði þeim merka áfanga að byggja upp komplett bandarískt 20. aldar frímerkjasafn. Það má segja að hann hafi náð að fylla upp safnið sitt með leikfléttu. Í nóvember 2005 keypti hann heila örk af hinu fræga frímerki "inverted Jenny" en þar er um að ræða bandarískt flugfrímerki frá 1918 þar sem flugvélin Curtis JN-4 snýr öfug á frímerkinu. Frímerkið kostaði þrjár milljónir dollara (rúmlega 200 milljónir Íkr). "Jenný" frímerkið notaði hann síðan í skiptum árið 2005 við Donald Sundman og fékk í staðinn "Z-Grill" frímerkið en í dag eru aðeins talin vera til tvö slík merki í heiminum.

#2, 3, 1873 4s Dark carmine and 8s Brown, perforated 14 x 13 1/2, two singles of the former and a single of the latter, all tied to a unique "parcel" cover to Reykjavik by very rare antique type "Völlur/15.1" town postmarks (Facit R3 rarity rating), two strikes tie the stamps and a third very clear strike at top left of cover, the stamps themselves with small perforation flaws (a few short or missing perforations) which are quite characteristic to all Skilling stamps of Iceland, the reverse of the cover with backflap faults from removal of wax seal (one backflap separated and hinged into place), the address side of the cover is extremely attractive and clean, in fact its overall appearance is far superior to most of the small number of existing first issue Skilling covers, fine.Covers bearing the first issue Skilling stamps of Iceland are among the greatest and most desirable postal history rarities of any Scandinavian country. There are a total of 65 recorded covers, however 52 are housed in museums, leaving only 13 covers available to collectors. The cover offered here is the only known inland parcel letter franked with Skilling stamps.A showpiece cover essential to the serious collector or exhibitor of Iceland. Accompanied by 1998 certificates of Vagn Jensen, Carl Aage Møller and Lasse Nielson; ex-Dr. Scott (Facit #2, 3).

#6, 1873 4s Carmine, perforated 12 1/2, select unused example, well centered and margined, rich color, very fine; 1970 PF certificate; ex-Joyner (Facit #6; 12,500SEK).

#18a, 1898 40 Red violet, perforated 12 1/2, handsome mint example of this very rare stamp, with only 40 examples known, strong fresh color, well centered, o.g. which is just slightly disturbed from hinge removal, very fine; among the rarest stamps of Iceland; light expert's signature in pencil (Facit #30; 70,000SEK).

#31a, 1897 3a on 5a Green, large type, perforated 14 x 13 1/2, the unique mint example being Iceland's rarest mint stamp, marvelously fresh, deep rich color, well centered, full o.g., small h.r., very fine; the "3 prir" surcharges, either in small or large type, on the 5a stamp perforated 14 x 13 1/2 are among the rarest of all of Iceland's stamps, but they are incredibly rare when found in large type such as the stamp offered here, currently there are only a handful of known used copies (see next lot for a used copy) and there is only one mint example known, the fantastic stamp offered here; obviously no collection of mint Iceland stamps can be complete without this famous stamp; signed lightly in pencil by both Witt and Bloch; also accompanied by 1971 Friedl, 1971 Witt and 1999 Møller certificates; ex-Crawfoord and Dr. Scott.

#O5, 1878 5a Brown official, two copies, both with fine centering, tied to a very rare cover by two strikes of provincial "Isafjordur/3.12" town c.d.s., sent to a printed address in Reykjavik, postmaster's fancy oval "Isafjordur" crown and posthorn handstamp on reverse, along with Reykjavik arrival c.d.s., fine; early officials used properly on cover are extremely rare; 1995 Pollack certificate; ex-Crafoord (Facit #Tj5; 50,000SEK).

#O6a, 1876 10a Ultramarine official, fairly well centered single tied to a rare 1877 folded letter to Gudrunarkoti by central strike of "Hjardarholt/18.11" town c.d.s., additional clear strike at bottom of cover, stamp with tiny corner flaw at bottom right of little significance, overall a fine and most attractive cover; any of the early officials on cover are extremely rare, often with just a few examples of each value known properly used on cover; 1995 Pollack certificate (Facit #Tj6a; 50,000SEK).
